It encompasses approximately one hundred different public schools, with 45 elementary schools, seven middle schools and seven high schools, eight special education schools, eight alternative schools, 19 contract alternative schools and five charter schools. It has a diverse student population. The children speak over 90 different languages other than English within the school district. It is number 98 on the list of largest school districts in the United States.

The citywide referendum called Strong Schools, Strong City was passed during the 2008 elections. Its goal is to make every child college ready. It aims to improve early reading skills, enhance math and science programs, update textbooks and technologies and manage class size to enhance student teacher interaction. With the overwhelming support of voters in Minneapolis, the future of the Minneapolis Public Schools shines brighter than ever before.
